Creating Files

Document Layout:

  1. Create one item per document.

  2. Both graphics and text should be sized at 100%.

  3. Send only files needed for the item(s) being ordered.

  4. Final document size should be the same size as the label ordered or should clearly indicate crop marks for label position.

Fonts:
To guarantee an exact font match, we recommend you select a font from our on-line catalog. When selecting fonts, be sure to select Postscript Type 1 fonts using Adobe, Agfa, or Bitstream font libraries as are these are the fonts we will use to output your order. Never use the stylization palette to bold or italicize your font. Our  vendor's imagesetter does not recognize these as valid changes to the fonts and will not render them correctly. If you use a font that is not in the catalog please send us the Macintosh Postscript screen & printer fonts used, or using your Illustration program, convert all text "to curves" or "create outlines" in your files. We are unable to accept Apple® System Fonts (Chicago, Geneva, Monaco and New York) or any other True Type Fonts because they may not be rendered correctly on our vendor's Imagesetter.

A Note on PC Fonts:
Our vendor outputs from Macintosh. When Mac fonts are substituted for PC they may differ somewhat. To avoid this variance we recommend you use an Illustration program to convert all text "to curves" or "create outlines". Also follow the list below pertaining to font specifications.

  1. Do not send in your PC versions even if the font looks the same, we can not use them.

  2. If we are to substitute fonts select only the fonts listed in our catalog, using the name shown. A composite can be sent, and with your approval, our best match substitution can be made. To ensure you receive your desired product, a proof may be requested at a cost of $13.00*.

Bleed Requirements:
When a bleed is desired on any item, an extension of at least 1/8" should be allowed on each applicable side. If this allowance is not made, we would require an art charge to add this.

Screens:
All screens should be a minimum of 10%, lighter screens will not reproduce well on our presses. Screens of over 90% may appear as solid colors due to dot gain on the press.

Color Separation:
Specific guidelines need to be followed when coloring documents. It is important to follow these to avoid any delays in processing your order.

  1. Use only CMYK spot colors (cyan, magenta, yellow or black). Do not label them as process colors (no RGB, index, or process mix colors etc.). For special ink orders use Pantone spot colors.

  2. Always follow our color conversion chart as listed below or it will be necessary for us to question the color correctness. *Indicate any separations on your order blank.

  3. You are responsible for any trapping or spreading needed for orders requiring registration. A trap allowance between .4 and .7 pt is acceptable.

Application specific requirements

QuarkXPress® 4.04 or earlier and PageMaker 6.5 - Please do not use the pasteboard extension!

  1. Along with your file sent for placement, submit all supporting graphics files. Without the supporting graphics we can not properly render your artwork on our vendor's Imagesetter.

  2. Color your text and graphics per the enclosed specifications and then group your layout before sending.

  3. We prefer placed images to be in a TIFF format. We have experienced some problems with .PCX formats while working in QuarkXPress®.

Freehand® 8.0 or earlier

  1. Be sure to "convert to paths" and group all characters in your document.

  2. Color your text and graphic according to our specifications.

  3. If using an imported graphic in your Freehand document, make sure you include the original graphic file and export it as an .eps.

Photoshop® 5.0 or earlier

  1. Files must be saved as a Macintosh® TIFF with LZW compression.

  2. Do not color an image in Photoshop®. We are only able to accept bitmap images at 600 dpi and grayscale images at 300 dpi effective resolution.

  3. Scan from only good black/white artwork that is crisp, otherwise, please touch-up art before sending.

Adobe Illustrator® 4.0 or earlier

  1. Create all text as "outlines" and group all characters when working in Illustrator®

  2. Color your text and graphics according to our enclosed specifications.

  3. For placed graphics, send a separate file containing your graphic as a supporting file.

Corel Draw®
The only file format we can accept from Corel Draw is an exported "Adobe Illustrator .ai" file. Please do not send us ".cdr" or ".eps" files generated by Corel Draw as we will not be able to use them. Always send your exported .ai file and any supporting graphics. If sending by mail, it would be beneficial to include a printed copy to be used for placement and/or backup if needed.

  1. Color your text and graphics according to our enclosed specifications.

  2. Export as an "Adobe Illustrator .ai" file. Be sure to select "text to curves" and "retain spot colors".

  3. See notes below for your specific version of Corel Draw.

    • In version 3.0 & 4.0 do not place Bitmap images such as tiff, .bmp, .pcx, etc., just indicate their size and placement in your Coral Draw® document and be sure they are saved in Macintosh® TIFF format with LZW compression and send them along with your .ai file.

    • In versions 5.0, 6.0 & 7.0 placed Tiff images are acceptable, be sure they are saved in Macintosh® TIFF format with LZW compression and send them along with your .ai file.

    • If you have version 6.0, you will need to contact Corel and install all the current builds or revisions needed to export files.
